I always enjoy the opportunity to try and get close enough to the smaller birds when I can. Usually there is always one area close to where you live where they are used to people and often get fed! These are the places to scout out unless you want to use a remote or a blind. Always watch your backgrounds and the key I find is to always get the eye in focus! Try and get the sun or strong light on them, not behind them. Use a fast enough shutter speed so you don't blur, but it sometimes means a shorter depth of field. Keep still and often you will be rewarded with some amazing shots. Generally up to 200mm is enough if they are close. Here are a few from a shoot earlier today. All were maximum 200mm focal length.
